Not Achieving Your Goals? Here's What You Can Do About It - 98 Limitless Podcast

We are quickly approaching the 3-month mark of 2024. I know… Where did the time go? If you are like other entrepreneurs, you likely are thinking about the BIG goals you set for your year and either feeling behind or on track. On today's episode, Jamie Ratermann discusses the frustration and guilt that might come up when fail to reach your goals. She shares tips to approach the 2nd quarter of the year a little differently.

The Pitfalls of Traditional Goal-Setting

Traditional goal-setting methods, such as the SMART system (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound), may seem logical on the surface. However, they often fall short when it comes to motivating and guiding entrepreneurs through the ups and downs of business growth. Setting external goals alone is not enough to sustain motivation or navigate setbacks effectively.

Introducing NICE Goals

Enter NICE goals – a refreshing alternative to the traditional SMART approach. Coined by Ali Abdaal in his book "Feel Good Productivity," NICE goals are designed to align with how humans actually achieve success. They focus on near-term objectives, input-based actions, controllability, and energizing approaches to goal pursuit.

Implementing NICE Goals in Your Business

Here's how you can start implementing NICE goals in your entrepreneurial journey:

  1. Enjoy the Process: Shift your focus from solely outcome-driven goals to enjoying the journey of growth and development.

  2. Celebrate Small Wins: Take time to acknowledge and celebrate the progress you make, no matter how small, along the way.

  3. Optimize from Evidence: Treat your business as a learning laboratory, gathering data from your experiences to continually refine and improve your strategies.

While external goals like reaching a certain revenue target are important, they should not be the sole focus of your entrepreneurial journey. By embracing NICE goals – ones that are Near-term, Input-based, Controllable, and Energizing – you can cultivate a more fulfilling and sustainable approach to business growth. Remember, success is not just about the destination; it's about the journey and the person you become along the way.
